Ryan Dorsey Gives Update on Naya Rivera’s Son 5 Years After Her Passing

Actor Ryan Dorsey bravely opened up about how his son is doing since the passing of his actress mom Naya Rivera.

She passed away from drowning on June 8, 2020, after she went missing with her son Josey at Lake Piru in California. She shared the child with Dorsey.

He talked to US Weekly to give fan an update on how Josey is doing. Right after her death, Dorsey said he moved with Josey back to his hometown in Charleston, West Virginia.

He told the outlet that the two have since been able to fall into a happy rhythm since the tragic day. Dorsey said his son has a grief counselor.

Josey Is Musically Gifted

Josey is currently enrolled in school and frequently performs in plays. He also takes piano lessons, according to his dad.

“I see how creative [Josey] is,” Dorsey told the outlet. “He’s been playing piano for a year and he is getting better at that. It’s been awesome to watch him go from poking around on one finger to playing with two hands.”

Rivera, who starred in “Glee,” clearly passed down her singing ability to her son.

“He’s starting to really hit the notes when he’s singing,” Dorsey added. “He said to me the other day, ‘Dad, I think I might want to be a musician. My mom is a singer, so why not me?’ I just thought that was a beautiful thing.”

Dorsey Has Rivera’s Family Very Involved in Their Son’s Life

While Dorsey and his son no longer live in Los Angeles, the “Justified” actor makes an effort to visit her family. He told the outlet Josey will frequently FaceTime family and talkes with his grandmother and uncles.

“[Josey will] always have a lot of memories [of his mother],” Dorsey added. “He’s still telling stories about when we went to this place or that place. We have a lot of videos. Your iPhone will remind you, ‘Three years ago on this date,’ and I’ll say, ‘Hey, do you remember this?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, I remember.’”

Dorsey also said that Josey is encouraged to share his thoughts and feelings whenever he thinks about his late mother.

“Josey is going to be her legacy,” Dorsey added. “I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I think he’s going to do great things.”

Josey will be turning 10 in September, and Doresey said he will continue the tradition of having a big celebration for the day. Rivera started it when he was a baby.
