Strangely enough Salman has never got that acclaim, even though the signature steps of most of his songs have gone on to become so celebrated that other actors have imitated him on shows and events. Salman’s towel moves in Jeene Ke Hai Chaar Din in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi belt step in Dabangg, Dhinka chika in Ready, Jumme Ki Raat Hai in Kick, Selfie song in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, lying-down-on-ground step for Jag Ghoomeya in Sultan and now the current radio movements in Sajan Radio and bhaihood song Naach Meri Jaan in Tubelight, to name a few, have always been the rage everywhere. Salman has to move and it becomes famous.

And guess what’s best about Salman’s famous dance steps – he does not rehearse any step at all but just watches the choreographer rehearsing and picks up from that! Yet Salman’s famous signature steps speak for themselves! How many stars can boast of their unique, signature dance steps without rehearsal? Yes, you have read that right. Read it in Naach Meri Jaan choreographer Shabina Khan’s own words…

No rehearsals for Salman
Shabina, who has been working with the star since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Khamoshi, and has done the song Naach Meri Jaan in Tubelight with Salman and Sohail Khan, says, “With Selman, you have to understand his praise as it won’t be verbal. If he doesn’t change your step then that’s praise for you. Normally he doesn’t rehearse. He comes on the sets and while he’s getting ready, Salman will keep watching you dance so when I see him coming on sets I take my assistant and start dancing as if I am rehearsing. I know that from the time he will see me rehearsing and he will reach location, he would have learned the steps. Salman will then come and say, ‘Kya karna hai?’ and when we show him and he doesn’t change anything, that’s your biggest compliment. It means he has loved everything we choreographed. He’s a superb dancer and very informed about everything. If we ask him ‘Sir aur kuch karna hai?’ and he replies, ‘No, yeh correct hai…’ then that means you have nailed it. Salman sir so unique he understands any step. He knows the pulse of his audience and what is entertainment.”

Another interesting fact that Shabina tells us about Salman is that he never sits down and discusses the songs and yet he understands what it means. “”The song Nach Meri Jaan is the first song in the film and very important as establishes Salman, Sohail and all the other characters in the film. Salman sir called for me as he knew I know dancing and storytelling. My brother Sharjil is chief assistant choreographer on the sets of all my films and shares his inputs about the choreography of the songs. It was because of my bond with my brother that Salman vested his trust on me with Nach Meri Jaan and called me to choreograph it. He has observed Sharjil and my bond on the sets.”

My connect with Salman

Shabina says she has grown up watching and working with the star – from being an assistant choreographer Khamoshi to Dabang, Jai Ho & Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. “I have known Salman sir since ages. I was Class 8 when I got a call from Ganesh Hegde to assist him in Khamoshi. After I assisted Ganesh Acharya and I did all the [tooltip id=”88b6af99531f838ed90aed058b7d870a”][tooltip id=”c1b465420d07c688942ed18eadfd9f92″ keyword_color=”#000000″ background_color=”#ffffff”][tooltip id=”4db8f5608d45f5de7881d9bce162f4bf”]Salman Khan[/tooltip][/tooltip][/tooltip] and Govinda songs. When I started working independently Salman sir called me for a song in Dabangg. Then I did a song in Jai Ho and eight songs in Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo. After that he called me for Naach meri jaan. To Shabina, Naach Meri Jaan is a perfect blend of dance and storytelling and depicts the emotional relationship of a brother (Salman) towards his sibling (Sohail). “Very rarely we come across a song which holds an emotional connect. I could instantly connect with the song because of my relationship with Sharjil. The song was not easy but I didn’t have to make Salman and Sohail sir work hard, as they felt the emotional connect with each other because they are real brothers – just like Sharjil and me!”
Naach Meri Jaan dance
The whole unit used to dance when Naach Meri Jaan was being choreographed. “Everybody loved the steps so much that everyone on the sets – from my dancers to the technicians and light boys would do the step. Even Kabir Khan participated as he loved the dance steps so much. It’s the first time I have seen a director dancing and practicing with a choreographer. After pack-up he and his assistant directors would learn the steps from me in freezing locations like Kulu Manali. Kabir sir sat me down and briefed me about his vision with the song. The feeling of the song is very happy go lucky. I am privileged to get a chance to work with Kabir sir. He, Sooraj Barjatya and Rajkumar Hirani are my favorite directors and no way will I leave a chance to choreograph in their films.”
