Sounds absurd. But that’s exactly what Dutt’s Ahmad Shah Abdali looks like in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat. A straight copy of Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Allah-u-ddin Khilji in Padmaavat.
Says a source close to the Padmaavat team, “The clothes, mannerisms, body language even the aggressive way Dutt speaks his power-hungry lines are a replica of Ranveer’s Khilji. It’s as though director Ashutosh Gowariker made Sanjay Dutt look and imbibe Ranveer’s act.”
While Khilji’s portrayal as a sex maniac in Padmaavat was panned in some sections, there is already a widespread protest in Afghanistan about the way Dutt has played Ahmad Shah Abdali. It is hoped in Afghanistan that he won’t be demonized just for cheap thrills.
Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, Shaida Abdali tweeted, “Historically, the Indian cinema has been extremely instrumental in strengthening the Indo-Afghan ties – I very much hope that the film, Panipat, has kept that fact in mind while dealing with this important episode of our shared history!”
