Sara Ali Khan, who has rapidly risen to the ranks of the top entertainers in Bollywood , now faces the formidable challenge of encoring her mother’s most iconic role in Basu Chatterjee’s 1986 social comedy Chameli Ki Shaadi.
The film was a moderate success and is regarded as Amrita Singh’s strongest performance vehicle of her career.
It would be disastrous for Amrita’s daughter Sara Ali Khan to do a remake of her mother’s most iconic. Sara should not even go anywhere near Chameli Ki Shaadi. It would be like Twinkle Khanna re-doing her mother Dimple’s Bobby, or Soha Ali Khan in a new-age version of her gorgeous mom SharmilaTagore’s Amar Prem. Or Mala Sinha’s daughter Pratibha encoring her mother’s Dhool Ka Phool.
Even the thought of Sara Ali Khan doing Chameli Ki Shaadi is scary. The comparisons between the two versions of the same film would be pretty much in the mother’s favour, no matter how effectively Sara is able to rehabiliate her mother’s world.
Sara Ali Khan has just begun her career. Her first two films Kedarnath and Simmba reveal her to be natural-born camera-friendly vivacious and spontneaous. But she’s no Amrita Singh. Not yet. So let’s not push it.
