Say Goodbye to Pierce Brosnan’s Highest-Grossing Movie That Spawned a Sequel

Pierce Brosnan fans have just been dealt a devastating and unexpected blow. Brosnan has starred in plenty of blockbusters over the years, mostly thanks to his time playing 007 in the ’90s James Bond movies, but the highest-grossing movie of his career actually belongs to a different franchise. In 2008, Brosnan starred alongside Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, the 2008 musical rom-com set against the backdrop of a colorful Greek island. Mamma Mia! has been streaming on Netflix for quite some time now, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film will be next month on November 15.

No new streaming home for Mamma Mia! has been announced, but considering the film’s massive popularity, it likely won’t take long for it to find a home on another of the big streaming services. Mamma Mia! wasn’t particularly beloved by critics or audiences upon release, which led to the film earning a Rotten 55% from critics and a 66% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. But it’s become a cult classic in the nearly 20 years since it hit screens. Its $706 million box office total is also enough to make it the highest-grossing movie of Brosnan’s career, even surpassing all his James Bond movies.

Phyllipa Lloyd directed Mamma Mia!, but she did not return for the 2018 sequel, and was instead replaced by Ol Parker. Lloyd’s last work came in 2020 on Herself, the Amazon original movie starring Molly McCann and Clare Dunne. She’s also famous for her work directing The Iron Lady, the 2011 docudrama starring Streep and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny).

When Does Pierce Brosnan’s Next Movie Come Out?

Pierce Brosnan has a few projects in development, but only one has secured an official release date. Brosnan will star alongside Lily James in Cliffhanger, which is a remake of the 1993 Sylvester Stallone film of the same name. Brosnan’s Cliffhanger will be released in theaters on August 28, 2026, and the film comes from Jaume Collet-Serra. Collet-Serra previously directed Carry-On, the Taron Egerton-led holiday thriller on Netflix. Brosnan is also due to reprise his role as Conrad Harrigan in the second season of MobLand, which will begin filming any day now, and will likely be released next year.

Be sure to watch Mamma Mia! before it leaves Netflix on November 15, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
