Schitt’s Creek featured a lot of great actors, but a particular fan-favorite from the show is returning to TV, and they’re totally unrecognizable. Running for six incredible seasons on CBC, the Dan and Eugene Levy-created comedy introduced the Rose family to the public. They’re a well-off clan that suddenly found themselves in a financial conundrum after being swindled by their business manager. They are forced to settle into a small town that they unknowingly bought in the past.
With a stacked cast including the Levy father-and-son duo, as well as Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy, what elevated Schitt’s Creek to be one of the best comedies in the past decade were its supporting characters. As the Roses got used to their new life in a crappy small town that they didn’t want to be in, they interacted with people that either resulted in life lessons or comedic moments.
One of them is Noah Reid, who played David’s kind and level-headed partner, Patrick. That’s why it’s jaw-dropping to see him in his latest small screen role.
Noah Reid Is A Notorious Serial Killer In Fox’s Murder In A Small Town
Reid makes his TV return in Fox’s Murder in a Small Town season 2 as Tommy Cummins — the series killer that Rossif Sutherland’s police chief Karl Alberg hunted and successfully arrested in the show’s debut year. The notorious criminal’s story is one of the very few overarching storylines in the Fox murder mystery based on the Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries, a series of British Columbia–set crime novels by L. R. Wright.
The last time that Reid was seen as his villain character was in Murder in a Small Town season 1 finale. Clearly, however, his story is not yet done. While Karl was able to arrest him for his crimes, it seems like the road to justice is still long. In his return in Murder in a Small Town season 2, episode 8, “Masterpiece”, Jamie Chung also joins the cast as the assistant DA tackling the case.
Per executive producer Tina Pehme (via TVInsider), the upcoming outing will be a bit bigger than the show’s usual fare. She also confirms that Cummins is Karl’s arch-nemesis in the show. For context, Reid’s character was revealed to be the art teacher secretly killing people and using them as models for his paintings — truly a departure from the actor’s lovable role in Schitt’s Creek.
Why You Should Be Watching Murder In A Small Town
Thrillers and cop procedurals have been tried and tested on network TV for decades. CBS, ABC, and NBC have their respective takes on the genre, and all three also have their premier offerings from that established sandbox. However, because Murder in a Small Town isn’t airing on those networks, it’s easy to cast it aside, which is a shame, considering that it has a unique appeal as a police show. The show’s debut year had between 1.7 to 2.2 million viewers every week. Coming into its sophomore year, however, Murder in a Small Town‘s episodic ratings are all above 2 million viewers.
While that’s an encouraging sign that the show is slowly gaining popularity, it’s still a far cry from what other police procedurals are tallying. With Reid’s return as Cummins, however, hopefully Murder in a Small Town gets more traction, increasing the chances of Fox renewing it for season 3.
