SEVENTEEN member Vernon has recently become the center of controversy after posts allegedly made by his mother surfaced online.
The situation began when a long post written by an account believed to belong to Vernon’s mother gained attention on X (formerly Twitter). In the post, she discussed HYBE, Pledis Entertainment, and BTS, acknowledging that “BTS built the company that was able to buy Pledis [SEVENTEEN’s label]” while claiming that HYBE used SEVENTEEN to “offset income loss during BTS’s enlistment period.”
Shortly after, internet users uncovered additional posts allegedly linked to her account, including political commentary that appeared to express support for former U.S. President Donald Trump. The account, identified as @MelodyVernonK, drew further suspicion after tweets referenced the same name listed on her public Facebook profile.
Among the resurfaced tweets, one response to a post defending Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Muslim mayor of New York City, drew particular criticism. Many interpreted her words as equating Muslims with felons, a remark that quickly fueled accusations of Islamophobia.
Another controversial post allegedly mocked a user by asking if they had Tourette syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary tics. The comment, coupled with the use of the r-word, widely recognized as a slur, intensified public outrage.
In response to the growing criticism, Vernon’s mother clarified her stance. She denied harboring any hatred toward BTS, explaining that she actually liked the group and emphasized that her issue was not with BTS themselves, but with certain fan behaviors.
She also addressed a tweet suggesting that BTS’s personalities were a reflection of their upbringing, calling the statement “ironic,” and attempted to distance her comments from the idea of personal attacks on the group.
Despite these clarifications, the backlash has intensified. Many fans believe her repeated involvement in sensitive fandom discourse is inadvertently harming SEVENTEEN’s reputation. Critics argue that while Vernon is not responsible for his mother’s actions, public perception may still impact the group, especially amid heightened tensions between fandoms.
