'Sheriff Country' Co-Creator Promises the New Spin-Off Takes Some "Big Swings" for Network TV

There will be a brand new police show on the scene when CBS’ Sheriff Country premieres this October. While most plotlines for the Fire Country spinoff remain closely guarded (though it is known certain story arcs will intersect), we recently got some more information about the show courtesy of co-creators and executive producers Max Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater. The group appeared together during a CBS press conference attended by Collider, where more nuggets about the series were shared.

“CBS has been nothing but supportive of us really taking big swings in terms of the storytelling,” Phelan said. “And if there’s one thing that streaming has done is it has forced network TV to really invest in exciting stories and storytellers and to push the boundaries.” The show has to “just focus on what’s right here in front of us and try and do the best that we can with what we have,” added Thieriot. This sentiment was echoed by Rater, who said:

“It does push us like we know it’s got to be good. Every episode has to be good. We have to be really clear, with the story we’re telling, and we have to like it, you know, we’re all really smart people and if we like it, I bet other people are gonna like it.”

‘Sheriff Country’ Stars Morena Baccarin

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Thieriot, Phelan and Rater are excited for Sheriff Country; the trio helmed the wildly successful Fire Country (which Thieriot also starred in), so a spinoff show about law enforcement seemed natural. Sheriff Country will star Morena Baccarin as Mickey Fox, a no-nonsense sheriff who first appeared in Fire Country. Mickey tries to keep the streets of Edgewater safe while dealing with her estranged father and her daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri). The show also stars Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver, Matt Lauria, Caroline Rhea, and more. In addition to executive producing, Thieriot will also have a guest apperance in the show.

So while the true nature of Sheriff Country remains closely guarded, it seems that the Fire Country spinoff will be making some sparks of its own. The show comes from CBS Studios, with Phelan and Rater executive producing for their Midwest Livestock Productions banner alongside Thieriot and Jerry Bruckheimer for Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Several notable Fire Country alumni also directed episodes of the new show.

Sheriff Country will premiere on CBS on Oct. 17. Fire Country is streaming now.
