Even as Comedy Nights Live, the show that Kapil Sharma spearheaded on the Colors channel is threatened with imminent closure Kapil’s recently-started show on Sony Entertainment spirals down the entertainment ladder at an alarmingly rapid pace.
This weekend when the guest on the show was the eminent singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan one expected a certain decorum and decency, or tahzeeb on the show. But that was not to be. Throwing all caution to the winds and clinging to every morsel of mirth that could boost the show’s TRP ratings,Kapil Sharma and his team plunged into a satire on the Urdu language that left a large section of viewers shaken and embarrassed.
At one point during the episode (telecast on Sunday night) Kapil Sharma,Sunil Grover and Chandan Prabhakhar talking gibberish that was meant to be “Urdu” to impress the daft English-speaking nurse.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan also joined in the discourteous desecration of the Urdu language. When Kiku Shardapraised Rahat Saab’s “chachi-ki”—a modified coinage for mausi-ki which means the art of music and poetry—Rahat Saab laughed the loudest. He seemed to be doubling up with laughter every time the joke was on his singing talent.
To his credit Rahat Saab gave as good as he got. When Kapil asked if children in the Khan family were born singing, Rahat retorted, “Are all children in your family born doing comedy?”
Though it was a pleasant surprise to see the fun side of the serious singer the gags and jokes did not befit the caliber of the artiste and the digs at the Urdu language were in extremely bad taste.
