What advice did he give you when news about your acting in Parineeti came?
Well firstly, except my mom and brother, I didn’t tell anybody else about it as I wanted it to be a surprise. Of course I plan to show it to him now. All my friends and family from Iulia (Vantur), Mouni (Roy), Daisy (Shah), Alli AvRram and Bhai (Salman) have always stood by you and encouraged you, in whatever I did. When the poster was ready and came out a day before, they came to know and were like – ‘what’s this? Yeh kya now?’ I couldn’t sleep at all that night – I was so excited, nervous and happy and I think my friends also couldn’t sleep because they were as excited as me (laughs)! By God’s grace, all my family and friends have been very nice to me. Daisy and Elli were like ‘Welcome to the gang!’ Everyone has come together to support me and that is something I feel blessed about. The whole vibe of doing something is different, when your close ones support you.

Have you got into acting because Pulkit is an actor?
No no (laughs loudly)! I think that was a totally different. That way all my friends and sisters and brothers are actors so I could be inspired by them. I was inspired to get into acting by Salman bhai. When I started painting I was inspired by him, now it’s acting. He and Siddharth are the best brothers one can have! He was surprised and happy when he heard I was acting in this short film. Salman has always been very supportive of whatever I want to do and that’s the best part. As an elder brother he’s always there to support me in all my ventures and excitement – be it success or failure, Bhai is always there for me…

What made you decide to act?
The moment I heard the whole script it stirred some excitement in me as it’s about a father-daughter story and I was very attached to my father (who is no more). The kind of girl she is and the dialects she shares with her father (Kanwaljeet Singh) is what I used to share with my dad so when this short film came to me, I thought what better gift to give my father on Father’s Day? I could relate to the character – as a person, like if I was in that situation what I would do. The character is an extension of me so it was quite simple.

What does your family think of you acting?
Mom and my brother Siddharth, who is 10 years younger than me, have both seen the film and they are my biggest critics but they liked it a lot. Siddharth didn’t criticize me at all. Instead he asked me ‘So Di which is your next film?’ So I know I am set (laughs). Now I can sit and relax.

Do you intend to act in full-fledged films and is it your first step towards becoming an actress?
Right now, I have no clue where life takes me because I always take one day at a time. I had a lot offers even before this but Parineeti excited me. Anything that excites me – be it short films, web series, feature films or even TV – they should just excite me and make me feel that this is what I want to do.

Have you had any formal training in acting?
No. While I have not taken any acting classes, I have been on the sets of many films. Luckily for me, everyone on the sets from Kanwaljeet sir to Sunil Thadani were all so warm and all went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. They knew it’s my first time and been on their sets forever all made me feel so comfortable that I couldn’t have had a better workshop than this. I was like this little child who was pampered by everyone. And Kanwaljeet sir was very warm and kind. He went out of his way to teach me say the dialogues, scene breakups etc. I don’t think anybody could play a better father to me than him (laughs).

What kind of scripts would interest you at this point?
I am a very emotional person at heart so anything that is moving or touches my heart is something I would like to do. I like romantic fantasies, and any script that stirs my feelings like an emotional drama or movies about relationships movies or something that is talking about an issue and sends across an emotional message in a good way – is something would attract me.

Last year you produced a short film called Hatya?
I produced it because it had a very good content and was all about saving the girl child. If there’s something good and I think it needs to be done and I can do something about it, why not?
