Two of Bollywood ’s most enduring and charismatic stars were born on December 8. And it is no coincidence that Sharmila Tagore and Dharmendra have done some of their best work together.
Recalling her association with the original he-man of Hindi cinema Sharmila says, “We featured in some really good films, films that broke the mould in the 1960s as well as the mainstream commercial films like Mere Humdum Mere Dost and Yakeen. The fact that one of our favourite directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee cast us together repeatedly in Anupama ,then Satyakam and finally in Chupke Chupke also went a long way in making our association fruitful.”
Since Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore are born on the same date December 8, they would often cut a joint cake together on the sets of their films together.
Showering praise on Dharmendra, Sharmila says, “There is a deeply endearing quality about Dharamji.I think there is something special about people born on December 8.This quality has made him popular across generations of Indians all over the world. I was in Phoenix(US) for a family member’s health reasons. And I was taken aback by Dharamji’s popularity. I was asked about him everywhere. His popularity cuts across all age barriers.”
Sharmila feels the fact that he works less these days doesn’t diminish his popularity. “He has earned himself this phase of relative relaxation. Let him enjoy this time of leisure. I am sure he will get back to acting soon.”
