Space Marine 2 Is Getting More Free Content, But It Comes At A Huge Cost

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 feels like it’s on top of the world right now. Despite launching all the way back in 2024, it has retained a healthy player base, received numerous massive updates, several game modes, and a plethora of quality-of-life changes that have greatly improved the player experience. Its success has resulted in impressive sales and a sequel being greenlit, all of which is immensely exciting for fans of the game as well as those who have languished long enough without a decent Warhammer 40,000 video game.

After the amazing Space Marine 2 Update 8, which absolutely revolutionized the experience by adding a much-needed new game mode, fans have been wondering what is coming next, and, thankfully, Saber Interactive has delivered. In fact, it may have overdelivered, as Space Marine 2 is getting a lot of new content. Unfortunately, all of that new content comes at a price, one that will annoy fans in the short term but will, ultimately, benefit them greatly in the long run.

Space Marine 2 Is Getting Even More Updates

Another Year Of Free Content & Paid DLC

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has two more major updates scheduled before September 2024, which will mark the game’s first anniversary. The first is Update 9, and the second is the big anniversary update, Update 10. Both of these will change the game in significant ways, with the anniversary update obviously taking center stage. However, there’s a lot more Space Marine 2 content coming in 2025, as Saber Interactive has announced it is going to continue supporting it long into 2026.

According to the June Community Update, which was posted to the official Focus Interactive forum page, Space Marine 2 will be getting a “second year of both free and DLC content.” This means it will continue to receive support, “new PvE missions, enemies, weapons, and more” well into 2026, even despite Saber Interactive working hard on the upcoming Space Marine 3. It’s all very exciting, even if little has actually been announced about what this content will look like in the foreseeable future. The post reads:

We’re happy to announce that a second year of both free and DLC content included in a new yearly season pass is on the way! This extended support to Space Marine 2 has been possible thanks to your unwavering support, so once again, thank you very much for being part of it! Expect new PvE missions, enemies, weapons, and… more. It’s too early to provide more info, but stay tuned!

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 already has a huge amount of content on offer, from the many PvE-focused Operations to the PvP-focused War Eternal mode and the new Siege mode. There is also already an enormous arsenal and a huge variety of enemy types, so it’s hard to imagine how Saber Interactive will stuff it with even more content. Of course, there are plenty of exciting Space Marine 2 ideas, such as which enemies from the vast Warhammer 40K lore could be brought over, but we’ll have to wait and see what the developer eventually decides to add.

Space Marine 2’s Update 9 Is Missing Content

It Won’t Be Getting The Promised PvP Mode

Unfortunately, all of this new content comes with a little bit of a caveat. The two currently planned and officially announced Updates, 9 and 10, were originally meant to look a little different. Update 9 was to contain the new PvP mode, which Saber Interactive has described as taking place on a new map and featuring two opposing sides that will be Chaos against Chaos. However, that is no longer the case, and now Space Marine 2’s roadmap is looking a little different, although that isn’t to say the mode has been removed completely.

In the June Community Update, Saber Interactive announced that the PvP mode intended for Update 9 will be moved to Update 10 instead, making it a more impressive update overall. That means that Update 9 won’t add any new content, and instead, will be focused on Space Marine 2’s excellent balance changes. This wouldn’t necessarily be an issue if Update 10 was around the corner, but, unfortunately, players will have to wait quite a while before it is made available. That means there are no new missions, modes, weapons, or enemies to look forward to in the foreseeable future.

There currently isn’t a release date for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s Update 9, but it will likely release sometime in late July, potentially early August. This is based on the fact that Update 8 was released towards the end of June, but also takes into account the reduced scale of the update.

Space Marine 2 fans will need to wait until September to get their hands on Update 10. Of course, as frustrating as this is, Update 10 sounds absolutely worth it. It is bringing a new weapon, the ability to control a Hellbrute, new Chaos armor, and, of course, the aforementioned PvP mode. It’s exciting, but considering Space Marine 2 lives or dies based on its steady release of new content, this lengthy break could hurt it. However, that absolutely should not deter new fans from trying it out, as now is still undeniably the best time to start playing it.

Space Marine 2 may be taking a short break from getting new content, but newcomers should still absolutely dive in. That’s because, after a year of new updates, Space Marine 2 is absolutely brimming with content for both returning fans and newcomers to try out. It has nine different Operations – they’re PvE missions that take place parallel to the events of the main campaign – for players to complete either alone or with friends, as well as the Eternal War PvP mode, the Siege mode, the upcoming new PvP mode, and, of course, the incredible campaign.
