Squid Game Season 3 Creator on How Cate Blanchett’s Cameo Doesn’t Set up American Spin-off

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk clarified in a new interview that the ending of season 3 doesn’t set up the American spin-off produced by David Fincher. Reports about the upcoming project began circulating in October 2024, before the release of the second season of the South Korean original series.

Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed to Variety in a new interview that Season 3’s cryptic ending, featuring Cate Blanchett as the American recruiter, has no connection to the US spin-off of the show. “Actually, no, not at all. It’s not related to that,” the writer-director said when asked if the ending of his show was setting up David Fincher’s Squid Game: USA.

Dong-hyuk explained that all he “wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that’s all that was to it.” He added, “Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game. I have heard the rumors, of course, though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3.”

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Dong-hyuk also stated that Netflix hadn’t officially informed him about the spin-off, and he had only read articles about it. He proceeded to express admiration for Fincher’s previous works, such as 1995’s Se7en, and said, “So if he were to create an American Squid Game, I think that would be very interesting to watch. I would definitely click on it immediately after it’s released, if it were to happen.”

In the aforementioned interview with Variety, Dong-hyuk made it clear that if Squid Game Season 4 ever happens, he “would have to participate and lead” it. However, according to him, it would be “enough” for the American show if he only shared ideas. Dong-hyuk elaborated that while he believed he doesn’t need to be “completely hands-on in a project like that,” he would be happy to contribute in any manner if needed.
