‘Squid Game Season 3’ will be darker and more brutal than Season 2, says director Hwang

As Netflix’s series Squid Game Season 3 gears up for release, director Hwang Dong Hyuk has shared key points to look out for.
Set to premiere on June 27, Squid Game Season 3 follows Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae), who reenters the game with a purpose of his own and ends up losing his closest friend; the Front Man (Lee Byung Hun), who infiltrated the game concealing his identity.
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk commented on the new season, saying, “Season 3 is darker and more brutal than Season 2, but at the same time, it will be quite clever and humorous.”
He also spoke about the iconic game set of Squid Game, saying, “Through the game sets, I wanted to portray the atmosphere of childhood, the bleak circumstances the characters face, their moral dilemmas, and their cruel fates.” He added, “I wanted to pose a fundamental question — ‘Do we possess humanity, and does that humanity has the power and potential to make the world a better place?’”
The stills of the VIP room further pique interest by hinting at the grand scale of Season 3. Unlike previous seasons, which used black marble, the VIP room in Season 3 uses white marble. Production designer Chae Kyung Sun explained, “Unlike the fiery Gi Hun, the cold and composed Front Man is like ice. I used white marble to express that contrast in temperament,” shedding light on how the space reflects the characters.
The dining area for the VIPs also draws attention. “The hexagon is a very solid shape and has an oracular feel to it. I wanted to convey that,” said Chae Kyung Sun. In line with this, Season 3’s VIP room maximizes a sense of secrecy and privacy, while creating an even starker contrast with the space where players risk their lives in the game.
She added, “I think the embodiment of evil that encompasses all things cruel and violent is poison. So when designing the VIP room, I used a variety of colors for the poisonous plants.”
She continued, “If Season 1 evoked a grassland-like feel to depict a world which runs on the law of the jungle [survival of the fittest], Season 3 uses gorgeous but dangerous poisonous plants for a bold design.”
Squid Game Season 3 premieres on June 27.
