Have Sridevi and Irrfan been winning sympathy awards throughout the awards season this year? No one denies the two actors’ acting prowess and their indomitable hold over the craft of acting.
But let’s face it, getting Boney Kapoor on stage to collect the award on behalf of his dead wife as he sobbed while son Arjun Kapoor consoled him ,makes for great TRPs. The visual factor definitely played a part in the IIFA decision.
Don’t get me wrong. Sridevi is a great actor. I am her biggest fan. But Mom was not among her best performances. Many feel the best actress award should have gone to Vidya Balan for Tumhari Sulu.
Apparently Vidya was a “very strong contender”. But then the emotional factor came into play and influenced the decision in Sridevi’s favour.
The same happened at the National film awards this year where Sridevi walked away with the Best Actress award for Mom when there were far more awards-worthy performance in the reckoning from the regional cinema like Parvathy in the Malayalam film Take Off.
We love Sridevi. But is it fair to her or to the other contenders to give her the award for sentimental rather than pragmatic reasons?
