The trailer of Remo D Souza’s Street Dancer 3D proves there is no substitute to the masala entertainer. And when it comes to films about dancers and dancing there is no substitute to Remo d’Souza. Remo is to jiving feet what Rohit Shetty is to crashing cars.
The adrenaline rush in the trailer of Street Dancer is so steep it feels like an invitation to join in for a deep-dive into boogie nights.
Varun Dhawan and Shradha Kapoor have come together earlier for Remo’s other dance film. The USP this time is, they are competitive dancers from the two sides of the border. Varun is Indian, Shradha is Pakistani. Couldn’t you tell from her nose ring? In our cinema all Pakistani girls wear nose rings and all Pakistani men refer to one another as ‘Janaab’.
Street Dancer uses dance instead of cricket as the tie that binds the two countries. I think that’s a truly inspiring idea to nail a plot. As a choreographer Remo has the most fun when he is choreographing group dancers. The desi troupe dancing to a new pulse-pounding version of the anthemic Miley sur mera tumhara looks like the climactic highlight of a film that promises to show the two nations in a competitive spirit without getting into the dark politics that divides the two countries.
I think a film that shows India and Pakistan rising above politics, somersaulting in the air and then landing gracefully on its feet, is the need of the hour. This Republic day it is time to let the differences dissolve as everyone gets the dancefloor for a film that promises thumping entertainment. When Prabhudheva joins in, it is time to seriously dance till you drop.
Remo d’Souza tells me he considers Prabhudheva his lucky mascot. No matter what, Prabhu has to be in Remo’s films. Besides Prabhudheva, dancing and competing with rival dance groups, the one trait that binds all of Remo’s cinema is….the quest for new dance steps. Every move that Varun and Shradha make in Street Dancer 3D looks unique, untried.Sexily inviting.
Wah, Janaab!
