Holi Thoughts From Bollywood

Lata Mangeshkar “Holi  is a  festival of colours and a time of peace and harmony. I request  the men  of the country  to  desist from  hooliganism so  that  the women of the  country can also enjoy Holi without looking nervously  over their  shoulders. I  wish thisHoli  all Indians  would unite  to become one strong and powerful nation, so that no  enemy  from the outside would  dream of attacking us. Our film industry  has an amazing history  of secular values. In a Holi song like Mohe panghat pe nandlal cher gayo re. Naushad and Shakeel Badayuni Saab who  composed and wrote the song so beautufullt  were  both Muslims. And Rafi Saab sang  Madhuban mein radhika naache re(in  the  film Kohinoor) a classic  that  is remembered  every Holi. The days of  the big Holi bash  are now over. I attended many of them at Raj Kapoor Saab’s R K Studio. Ab toh na Raj Saab rahe na studioraha. Holi is now  a subdued festival. Abb wohjosh nahin raha.”

Shatrughan Sinha; “I pray for  peace and harmony this Holi. I  pray that better sense  would prevail over the  war-mongerers.And I pray that every Indian resolves this  Holi to vote for  the  parliamentary representatives  who would  voice  the  apprehensions   of  the common man. How  wonderful it would have been if this Holi we  could have celebrated the festival  without the clouds of war hovering over  our  great nation. I was  always very enthusiastic  about  Holi. But nowadays  the  josh is gone in the  film industry. Even the Bachchans don’t celebrate Holi with the same enthusiasm. Holi has now become a  family  affair rather than  community event.”

Dilip Kumar & Saira Banu:  “Ayk dosrey se mohabbat aur bhaichaara ho…our country  has the beauty of all the colours of the rainbow in its people’s togetherness…Hindustan is unique in its people’s love and respect of happy co-existence….may this always prevail…this is our prayer.”

Pooja Bhatt:  “Holi is a time where we need to  reinstate and believe in the virtue of being truthful and honest and fight away evil in all its forms. For me it’s about spreading love in a world plagued with hate.”

Preity Zinta: “As  of now I am just chilling for  Holi. Non-stop travelling has taken the josh  out of me. I just want  to  sleep.”

Rajkummar Rao:  “I’m going to play a bit with my friends and family here in Mumbai but I make sure that I always use safe organic colors only. All I would say is, it’s a festival of love and colors so do celebrate it with lot of love and harmony and be safe.”

Kriti Sanon: “I don’t have plans as such.. but my parents have come from delhi for Holi. So I’m just hogging on the gujiyas they’ve brought for us!”

Industry Comes Forward To Help Actor Turned Watchman

Subhash K . Jha

Rather than face the pain  and humiliation  of penury  the  out-of-work senior  actor  Savi Sidhu  opted to take  on  the  job of a watchman at a highrise building  in the suburbs of Mumbai.

After his story went  viral  this week Savi is flooded with  offers to return to cinema .

Says  Sushant Singh General Secretary of the Cine  & TV Artistes Association(CINTAA), “I spoke to him  a while back .He couldn’t call me earlier  as he was busy with auditions. He was sounding very happy,  I congratulated him for choosing to lead a dignified and honest life. He might’ve been down, but he chose not to be down and out.”

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta  feels Savi’s story  defines  the dignity of labour as well  as the callousness  of  the  entertainment industry. “I found his  outlook towards life very positive and dignified. We are in an uncertain business and have only ourselves to fall back on eventually – particularly in low phases. I support his dignity above empty words of support and sympathy. He is better off than many who I meet at receptions of producers offices whining or pleading and doing little about themselves, their lives or their self-respect. I salute his spirit.”

Alia,Varun Bag The Juiciest Roles In Kalank

BAlthough  the  eagerly awaited  forthcoming film Kalank has  a stellar cast ,  a source close to the  film says  the entire story revolves the  characters  played by  Varun Dhawan and  Alia Bhatt.

“This  is  not to say that other big names in the cast don’t have important roles. They do. But Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt,Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapoor play characters who figure prominently in  the lives of Alia and Varun. The entire plot  converges on  the Student Of  The Year  pair,” says  the knowledgeable  source.

The source  also adds that the  cast got into  the  film with its eyes wide open.  “Nobody’s role has been  reduced.Dutt, Dixit and the  others  got into it with their eyes wide open knowing fully well that Varun and Alia are Karan’s blue-eyed  protégés and that they’ve the best roles.”

A  catty actress who has worked  with Karan Johar’s Dharma Production  smirks, “What  choice do the  other actors have? Sure Madhuri,  Sanjay Dutt  are  iconic actors. But they have no film career  left worth talking about. As  for Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya RoyKapoor, when  was  the last time they  had a  hit? At least Kalank ensures that they are associated with a successful film.”

7 Reasons Why KESARI Has Blockbuster Written All Over

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

1.     Akshay Kumar in a turban never fails. Do recall Singh In  Kinng and  its unofficial  sequel Sing Is  Bling(whatever that meant).Akshay says he feels  very special when  playing a Sardarji. Surely, the feeling is shared by the audience as well.

2.     Akshay  plays a true-life Sikh warrior who  defended  our  country against a massive Afghani invasion. This hitherto-unfilmed episode  of Indian  history  was  to be made  with  Sanjay Dutt in  the lead by  director Raj Kumar Santoshi. It fell through. Later Salman Khan  was also associated with the project as  a producer. That  didn’t work out either.More  the hurdles, the sweeter the  fruits  of success.

3.     2019  is a  year  of  tremendous  success. 9 out  of  the  releases so far are declared  hits with Uri crossing the  boxoffice collection  of   almost every blockbuster.  Patriotism is clearly the  big selling-point at  the  boxoffice. And if you add Akshay Kumar  to it you just can’t go wrong.

4.     The past weekend went horribly wrong at  the boxoffice. All the  four  films released  on March 15 were miserable flops.  The  dark week can be  seen as  the precursor to  the  bright  light to come.

5.     Because  it is  Akshay  Kumar. When  was  the last time he had a flop? Akshayas  an instinctive  feel for  what works  at  the  boxoffice. It isn’t about  flogging the  formula. It is about discovering fresh insights in timeworn stories.

6.     Director Anurag Singh has done some  amazing work in Punjabi with DiljitDosanjh. With Akshay  Kumar comes Anurag’s biggest  litmus test. Never hasAnurag directed anything so big. The  sheer scale  of the film with battle scenes that feature   thousands, makes  Kesari an  epic effort even   before release.

7.     Ah,  and  one  more thing. Akshay  pairs  up with  Parineeti  Singh  for  the  first time. Parineeti’s  character gets her name  from her globally feted  cousin who at one time  was  Akshay’s favourite co-star. Is  Priyanka flattered?

Best Actress Oscar Winner Olivia Colman Travels To Bihar To Track Her Lineage

The very distinguished  British actress Olivia Coleman who has  won this year’s Oscar  for  best actress  for her performance in the dark period comedy  The  Favourite  , travelled all the way from London to a  small  townKishanganj in  Bihar recently.

Ms Coleman  was  searching for information on  her  great great great grandmother Harrriet who lived in Kishanganj  in 1807.

Sources  from the town say the visit created  no stir whatsoever.

Informs  Kishanganj  resident  academician Bholashankar  Singh,  “She came  to Kishanganj as  an  ordinary  tourist with no  baggage  , no entourage, She  travelled alone and seemed  to the locals like  just another tourist. No one had seen her  films. And this was just months before the Oscars .If she had come  after the Oscars  I’m sure more  people  would have known who she was. But I  don’t think she wanted to be recognized and  was  happy meeting locals  like an ordinary British  tourist desirous  of  finding out more about  her  ancestry.”

8 Reasons Why Badlaa Looks Seductive

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

B1.     Sujoy Ghosh  is  the  master  of seductive suspense. His film may(Kahaani) or may  not(Kahaani 2)  work at  the  boxoffice. But there’s no doubt he  knows how to play Bollywood’s Agatha Christie at a tea party with Alfred Hitchcock when  Briande Palma suddenly drop sin . Badlaa has  a gripping plot about  murder and  betrayal which  will have you guessing  till the end.

2.     It’s an  original!  What a change from  all the rip-offs  that we’ve been watching lately. Everything from the brilliant Gully Boy to the  ugh  Total Dhamaal  seems derivative. Badlaa is  completely  unique  story…or so Sujoy swears. I don’t know whether  to trust him. He HAS directed Alladdin and Delivery Boy.

3.     The  Big B is back. Now matter  how old he gets,  even  after 50 years of  film acting,  his penchant for  screen salvation  remains undiminished. This  is Mr Bachchan’s first release  for 2019 .Last  year he featured  in  the  disastrous Thugs OfHindostan. Everyone  makes  mistakes, Even God. I mean, even  Aamir Khan.

4.     Big B & Tapsee together again after the marvelously  empowering Pink. Again he plays  a lawyer  though a far more grounded  one this time. Nothing bi-polar about this  attorney.Tapsee plays his client accused  of  murder. Yup, there  is a dash of  Alfred Hitchcock in Sujoy’s  brew this time.

5.     Hero-Heroine but  no romance.  Mr B is the hero. Ms Pannu  is  the heroine. They are  generations removed and  yet  they’re the  plot’s protagonist, like Harrison  Ford and  Julia Ormond  in Sabrina. Why  must every  lead  pair be romantically  involved? Badlaa  tells you why they don’t have to be .

6.     The  first suspense  thriller  in   Hindi cinema  since  Kahaani that  will have guessing till the end. The  conclusion is  so  unexpected  you will  find your jaw dropping off from you face. The  build-up of the tension  is  nothing compared with what lies underneath.

7.     Badla  was  a film in  1974 which starred Shatrughan Sinha  as  fugitive  on  the run. It was  a hit. This Badlaa  with Amitabh Bachchan is  a  world apart. But Sujoyclaims  to  have always been inspired  by the hardcore mainstream  revenge sagas.  “What  is a film  without its core of  vendetta  in  the drama? It’s  like  a biryani dish  without  the fish,” says  Sujoy.Nothing fishy about Badlaa.

8.     Sujoy had the  script for Badlaa with him for  nearly ten  years. He wanted  to make  it with  Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan. But then  life has  other plans. Here  it is, ladies and gentlemen, the  suspense  film you won’t forget for a  very long time.

Vani Kapoor Grabs Another Major Yash Raj Film With Hrithik & Tiger

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

While  the Befikre actress Vani Kapoor has not made much  headway in  her  career elsewhere at Yashraj films she continues  to be  regarded as a  potential  star.

Yashraj’s head honcho Aditya Chopra who launched  Vani  in  Shuddh Desi Romance  as  the second lead  quickly saw her potential and  re-launched her as  the lead  in the high-profile Parisian romance  Befikre which  bombed  miserably at the  boxoffice.

Undeterred,  Chopra has  now  signed Vani in two  major forthcoming  films. In KaranMalhotra’s dacoit drama  Shamshera  Vani is paired  opposite Ranbir Kapoor  and in Siddharth Anand’s  untitled action  film she is paired opposite  Hrithik Roshan and TigerShroff.

Sources say  some of  the actors  in  two above films were  not too keen about their  co-star.But Vani being Yash Raj’s blue-eyed  girl is  ploughing  along  in the  big-budget projects.

Apparently Vani was also considered  for a plum role  in Yash Raj’s Thugs Of Hindostanwhich finally went  to Fatima Sana Sheikh.

Says a source close  to Yash Raj, “Adi Chopra  has an eye for talent. He has given the film industry superstars  like Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma .If he feels Vani Kapoor has got what it takes then he must have a valid reason to believe so. Woh ussey star banakar hirahenge.”

Tiger Shroff: “Let People Speculate About Me & Disha, Speculation Is Good”

Subhash K . Jha

Tiger Shroff’s Video Befikra With His Real-life Love Replicates Aditya Chopra’s Befikre

Tiger   Shroff ,who turned   29  on 2 March, couldn’t be in a  better place even if he wanted to . His career is going great  guns….no, make that blazing guns.  Baaghi 2 last year was a spectacular success.

Tiger  is  all but wrapped up shooting  Karan  Johar’s  Student Of  The Year.

“We’ve  just one more song to shoot. It’s the introductory song. And  I guess it will be spectacular. What else could it be when it is (Karan Johar’s) Dharma  production?” Tiger wonders rhetorically.

The  song  will feature Tiger dancing with Alia Bhatt.

“All  I know is  that it features me and Alia,” is all Tiger  will reveal.

Would Johar join the  jig? “Why not? For all  we know, he may do just. I don’t know  the details  of  the song and dance yet. But I do know  it’s going to be  fun, as the shooting of the whole film has been. It was   frothy and  enjoyable. It  is also  a lot of pressure  for all three  of us who play the lead, specially the  two new girls Ananya Pandey and Tara Sutaria who  have Alia Bhatt to be compared with  in the  first Student Of  The  Year. Both the girls  have worked  hard.Hopefully we will encore  the success  of  the first  film of the  frothy franchise.”

Tiger has also been shooting for an action film with Hrithik Roshan.  “Audiences  can expect both the expected—that is ,a lot  of  action featuring Hrithik Sir and me—and the unexpected. I can’t reveal  more about the film,  not even  its title. Because we don’t have any as yet. What I can tell you is, shooting with  my idol Hrithik Sir has been an experience I will  never forget. He lived  up to all expectations, and then some more. He would spend a lot of time  sharing his experiences with me. I came away enriched.”

Tiger’s  next project would be Baaghi 3.   “The plot is in  place , and of course Ahmed Sir(Khan) is directing. The pressure to deliver  another high-octane action film  after  the first two Baaghi 2 films is immense. All I can tell you  is, we are trying our best,”

Tiger also has Rambo, another action film which is an official remake   of  the Sylvester Stallone  franchise. “It’s a remake   of Rambo.Sylvester Stallone tweeted  about it. Would he  make  guest appearance in our film? That  would be a dream come true!”

As dreams come true for Tiger one after another  I cannot help question him  about the speculation  regarding his relationship with Disha Patani.

Tiger takes a deep breath and says, “Well, we are seen  together  at restaurants  for dinner and  for  coffee. She  is a dear friend and we do go out together. Beyond that, let people speculate. Some amount of speculation is good.”

Vinta Nanda Pulls Up Elnaaz Norouzi For Damaging The #MeToo Movement

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

Filmmaker Vipul Shah has been cleared  by  the Indian Film And Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) of sexual harassment charges  leveled  at him by Iranian actress ElnaazNorouzi  who came out  alleging  that Shah had made  improper sexual advances towards her  when she approached  him for  a role

The  IFTDA simply cleared Vipul Shah’s name since  Norouzi failed to turn up at any  of  the  hearings to examine her  allegation.

Writer Vinta Nanda who has accused  actor  Alok Nath of rape spoke exclusively  to this writer condemning  Norouzi  for  not taking her  allegations to their  logical conclusion.

Says  Vinta, “If you belong to an industry and have placed your faith in it, then you must cooperate with the associations that govern your craft. If the girl(Norouzi) isn’t a member ofIFTDA then she should’ve urged CINTAA, if she’s a member there, to collaborate withIFTDA so that she could get herself fair justice. But if you don’t  cooperate it is not right. When you don’t cooperate it signals that you’re in the wrong, or that you don’t care.”

Vinta  lauds the MeToo  movement  for bringing cases of sexual  harassment  out  in the open. “What the #MeToo movement has done is to shatter the silence that prevailed over exploitation of both women and men. It has forever therefore changed the way we view the issue of gender. Where there was no redress system in place, now it is there in every association and production office.”

Vinta regrets  the suffering  of  the potentially innocent casualties  of  the  MeToo movement.  “The industry has got its act together finally. However in the process there will be and has been some collateral damage, which is sad. For things to be fair across the board, everyone must cooperate. Those who don’t cooperate should then also not complain.”

While Vipul’s colleagues and  the film industry at  large have remained quiet over the allegations against Vipul  , one of his  actors spoke out in his defence, though anonymously. “I’ve never seen  Vipul behave inappropriately with anyone,  man or  woman. He  is asoftspoken well-mannered man ,a devoted  husband and father. That he would do something so  tacky is beyond my range of  imagination.”
