Ghost in the Shell has unveiled a new look at its upcoming revival, and it’s truly a sight to behold. In 2024, it was announced that Science Saru would be producing a new Ghost in the Shell anime, marking the first new version of the series since Ghost in the Shell: Arise in 2015 and the maligned live-action adaptation in 2017.

The idea of Science Saru working on a Ghost in the Shell anime is nothing but great, and its most recent promotions perfectly lean into that. A new trailer for the Ghost in the Shell reboot was shown at Anime Expo 2025, and while it didn’t show off much, based on it and comments from the staff, the new Ghost in the Shell anime will be closer to the original manga than any other adaptation before it. That’s exciting to think about for any Ghost in the Shell fans, and hopefully, the finished product will deliver on all fronts.

The Ghost in the Shell reboot is officially going back to its manga roots, and that’s a big deal. While Ghost in the Shell is known for being a moody and philosophical series about humanity, that’s not exactly the case in the manga, as while those elements exist, the original story is far more lighthearted and goofy than the movie and other adaptations; most notably, Motoko’s character was changed from an eccentric figure into a largely stoic one, and it’s to the point that she’s a different character, entirely.

None of that is a knock against the original anime, of course, as the original Ghost in the Shell film is a masterclass in writing and animation and has earned its place as one of the most iconic and influential pieces of animation. That being said, the original manga is plenty great on its own, so it’s great that Science Saru will give it a faithful adaptation by both capturing the manga’s art style and keeping true to the manga’s original tone.
