October might be over, and the warm fall hues of cozy nights are setting in, but that doesn’t mean the horror genre should leave your TVs. After a month dominated by sleepless nights courtesy of some of the scariest movies ever made, there’s still room for a few more nightmares. Thankfully, Plex has lovers of the devil’s favorite genre covered, as one of the most game-changing horrors of all time is now streaming.
The poster-child for the found-footage sub-genre, The Blair Witch Project, has officially joined Plex on November 1, as one of several horror films on this month’s slate of new arrivals. This includes John Landis’ beloved horror comedy An American Werewolf in London, A24‘s Dream Scenario, the terrifying The Descent and its sequel, the Scarlett Johansson-led sci-fi horror Under the Skin, and much more. Of all of these, The Blair Witch Project has had the biggest impact on the horror genre, changing the way horror movies were marketed and popularizing the found-footage style. For anyone yet to see the movie, a synopsis reads:
“Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who’ve traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale’s veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.”
‘The Blair Witch Project’ Is One of the Biggest Box Office Hits of All Time
Beyond its critical success, although the film proved more divisive with audiences, The Blair Witch Project was an immense success at the box office. Produced for just $500,000, the film earned a massive global haul just shy of $250 million. This was 413.8 times its investment, making it one of the most financially successful movies of all time. Split between a domestic haul of $140 million and a further $107 million from overseas markets, the film’s total revenue was enough to help it into the top 15 highest-grossing movies of 1999, as well as being the 27th highest-grossing horror movie of all time to this day.
The Blair Witch Project is available on Plex. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming news.
