The Perfect Villain For A Supernatural Revival Is A Character Dean Winchester Killed In Season 10

Supernatural should look to one classic villain for an arch-nemesis if it springs back to life. Supernatural season 15 ended with Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) dying fighting vampires and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) surviving him, growing old until his final end, and reunion with Dean and other old pals in the afterlife. This genuinely wonderful ending hasn’t stopped legions of fans from campaigning for more Supernatural, which always seemed to have more to offer after it looked like it had died a final death. One villain may be the key to a revival, offering Eric Kripke a route forward.

The Supernatural season 15 finale made it seem as if Sam and Dean were finally given a happy ending — it would be a shame to disrupt this. Perhaps a revival could focus on other characters, with the odd cameo from Sam and Dean as ghosts. Either way, it will need to tackle the sometimes blurry boundary between life and death that Supernatural explores as its bread and butter. With a revival not ruled out by Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki, it really may be a good time to look into the villain potential of Death himself.

Death Was An Underrated Supernatural Character

Death is one of the best characters in Supernatural, and his return as a villain would be most welcome. Played by Julian Richings from Supernatural seasons 5 to 10, Death is a mysterious and somewhat likable figure, occupying an ambivalent place in Supernatural‘s morality. Death has the capacity to be a perfect villain due to his ability to cause death and chaos in the mortal world, and he may go rogue due to his ancient solitude and various traumas. A Supernatural spinoff, reboot, or season 16 should take advantage of this potential.

Supernatural Could Exploit Death’s Power To Return Stronger

Supernatural should use Death as a pivot to come back. Showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that he would bring the show back if there was a story that felt right (via Collider). This makes sense, given that many Supernatural characters were starting to gain a reputation for indestructible plot armor, and the series itself sometimes seemed to wear indestructible income armor, seeming like a cash cow. Supernatural season 16 could become a reality if Kripke realizes Death’s ability to resuscitate Sam, Dean, or both, or otherwise cause havoc that would require a new generation of hunters.

I Need Supernatural Season 16 To Somehow Reverse The Shock Death Nobody Saw Coming

If Supernatural season 16 ever becomes a reality, there is one character death that needs to be reversed: the most shocking one in the entire show.

Season 15 offered a controversial ending — Dean went down fighting and doing what he loved best, which is what he wanted. Meanwhile, Sam died of old age. Many die-hard fans were incredibly relieved that the brothers’ stories were resolved tidily. But one of the harsh realities of the Supernatural season 15 finale, as recognized by many fans, was its lack of a dramatic ending that seemed fitting for such a high-stakes story. Death may be older than God himself in Supernatural, so one final face-off with him could give the show the ending some fans craved.

The Disadvantage Of Bringing Back Death As Supernatural Season 16’s Villain

Death Would Follow A Trend Of Overly Powerful Antagonists

But, there is a major drawback if Supernatural was to choose to have Death be the primary antagonist in season 16. It would mean focusing on another cosmic level villain. The thing is, when Supernatural began, it was focused on introducing the audience to folklore monsters like the wendigo, a ghostly woman in white, and werewolves. Of course, things like demons were always present, but it didn’t take on the larger context of angels and demons, heaven and hell, and more until several seasons in.

And as exciting as things got once Castiel arrived, and the show expanded the playing field to include these creatures from above and below, as well as the local myths and legends, there were definitely times when things were better with the simpler premise. The Winchester boys needing to fight God was good for a major resolution to the show, but when all the rivals they face have the power to extinguish all life with a thought, things can get a little out of hand. Death may not be as powerful as Chuck, but it would likely lead to a similar level of impossible stakes.

Death’s Return Is A Great Opportunity To Give Dean Winchester A Better Ending

Death Could Give Sam & Dean Their Perfect Supernatural Ending

Although that doesn’t mean that bringing Death back for Supernatural season 16 couldn’t create some incredible moments for Sam and Dean. In fact, Death could drastically improve the ending for Dean’s story if pulled off correctly. While Death should not be the main villain of season 16, having him join the cast for some important moments as a secondary antagonist or expressing how tired of the Winchester’s cheating death he is would be a fun and interesting way to bring him into the story. One of the most devastating elements of Dean’s death in the season 15 finale was the fact that he was killed by a simple vampire, after having overcome so many incredible challenges and fighting against angels, demons, God himself, and countless other threats.

I Need Supernatural Season 16 To Somehow Reverse The Shock Death Nobody Saw Coming

If Supernatural season 16 ever becomes a reality, there is one character death that needs to be reversed: the most shocking one in the entire show.

So, if season 16 were to replace the finale, see the Winchester’s return for one last road trip, and then fight some monsters that take them back to their roots, that could be a great way to pay off the show. But then, when the boys get to the end of the road, and they save the world yet again, Death could be the one to meet them, like an old friend, and tell them it’s time to call it a day. This would be a more satisfying death for Dean, and a good way to conclude the Winchester’s story in Supernatural.

Death killing Dean would be way more epic and fitting than a random vampire doing it.
