Physical activities and the ways people speak are both themes surrounding today’s Connections puzzle, creating a unique challenge when you try to put together four groups of four words. For some, this puzzle’s concepts will be easy to find patterns for. However, as I tried to find the right answers, I found that there were tricks that can fool even veterans if they don’t follow different clues.
You only have four chances to make a mistake during today’s Connections puzzle, which is only one less than most NYT daily Wordle puzzles. This means you should take your time looking for comparisons between words and consider all the contexts when one phrase is used. Try to visualize how you would say every term in the puzzle to spot patterns between it and another word.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
May 18 #707
Today’s puzzle was far easier for me to solve than previous ones, but only because I spotted specific patterns. I noticed that many words from the puzzle today involve performing actions or the preparation of different activities. This idea of verbs being more prevalent helped shape the category ideas I used to find many correct answers.
Speaking of categories, try to use some of these clues to start thinking about the sections present in today’s puzzle:
- One category is about things related to activities a student has to do.
- One category is about things related to positive words said to support teammates in a guessing game.
- One category is about things related to words used to describe how you’re ready for an activity.
- One category is about things related to words that gain more importance when an important vowel is involved.

ASSIGNMENT |

EXERCISE |
LESSON |
This part of the puzzle was fairly easy for me, as I always associate EXERCISE with a DRILL from playing sports when I was younger. Completing a LESSON or ASSIGNMENT is important in education, but both words are already close together for how similar their definitions are. By simply putting the two pairs of words I already had together, I was able to find this category’s theme without too much trouble.

ALMOST |

NOT QUITE |
WARM |
Initially, I put together ALMOST and CLOSE for how they both represented being near the completion of a goal. Following that trend, I recognized that being NOT QUITE along in a project meant that it still had some parts that were CLOSE to being done. Although I still didn’t know the right context, I knew being WARM toward something meant being close to a correct answer, which fit into the theme of the category I’d envisioned.

Anyone whose been available to hang out within a friend group can attest that having your schedule OPEN is crucial to any plan. Being GAME for an idea comes from having a FLEXIBLE schedule and being OPEN on certain days. When an event is EASY to attend, it makes it that much more important to travel to. This thought process was how I spotted a pattern in the puzzle for this category.

ONE |
This was the hardest part of the puzzle for me to figure out, mainly because I thought that ATHLETIC and GAME were related in some way. At a bit of a loss, I paired AREA and ATHLETIC for how both had the letter “A” at the start of their words, along with EXCELLENT for how an “A” is meant to show an excellent grade. After some time, I realized that ONE meant something singular, just an “A” item is just one instance of an object or thing.
