Varun Dhawan is smarting under the blow that is Kalank. While everybody connected with the film is understandably in a state of shock, for Varun who turns 24 this week, the film is a special shock as so far he has not had a single flop, unlike his co-star Alia Bhatt who in her crazily successful career so far has already tasted a failure earlier Shaandaar.
But the truth is, Varun is the weakest link in Kalank. His 6-pack torso, visible on screen quite frequently, didn’t quite fit into the 1940s era and neither did the absurd song sequences like ‘First Class’ where the dance steps were most incongruous.
Varun’s dialogue delivery also left much to be desired.
In fact Varun’s character’s packaging was all wrong. And he cannot completely be blamed for his failed performance.
However he’s done with experimental characters for now. Both Shoojit Sircar’s October where Varun poured his heart and soul to play the adamant lover-boy who insists that the girl in coma is in love with him, and Kalank where the adamant lover insists that the married woman whom he woos will love him in and out of bed, have failed to generate interest.
Varun Dhawan is back to doing the full masala thing in his next two films . He is full of sound and dance in Remo d’Souza’s Street Dancer before he leaps into Govinda’s territory with his father David Dhawan in Coolie No 1.
Interestingly ‘Street Dancer’ was a song that Govinda danced to in one of his biggest hits Ilzaam. There is no getting away from Govinda in Varun Dhawan’s carreer.
