What time is it? Show time! “Hamilton” fans are in for a treat.
One of the show’s original stars is coming back to grace audiences with his presence.
Leslie Odom Jr. is returning to his role as Alexander Hamilton’s frenemy, Aaron Burr.
Dear Theodosia
As “Hamilton” enters its tenth anniversary this fall, Odom will be there to ring in the decade. The actor left the stage show in July 2016 but is set to start a limited engagement on September 9 through November 23.
The news was announced during Odom’s stop on the “Today Show.”
“You don’t get shows that run ten years,” Odom said. “There’s a lot of shows that we love – great shows – they come and they go. That’s the nature of theatre.”
“For something to be embraced by the public and the culture in the way that “Hamilton” has and the way that “Rent” was is twice in a lifetime!” Odom adds with a laugh.
The Room Where It Happens
“Today Show” host Savannah Gunthrie states during the interview that “Hamilton” writer and creator Lin Manuel-Miranda is referring to the show’s decade year as “Hamil-Ten.” She also wonders if there will be any other surprises to coincide with Odom coming back.
“I’m not breaking any other news here today,” Odom says. “But I know they have a lot of wonderful things planned. It’s a big deal. We’re going to celebrate all year long.”
The show will go on at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
In a press release, Odom said “Returning to ‘Hamilton’ is a deeply meaningful homecoming. “I’m so grateful for the chance to step back into the room — especially during this anniversary moment and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many.”
“Hamilton” producer Jeffrey Seller praised Odom’s depiction of Burr, something he took note of during the first act two workshop where the actor sang “The Room Where It Happens.”
“How lucky we are that Leslie is returning to Hamilton and bringing his indelible Burr back to Broadway,” Seller states in the press release.
Odom originally took on the role of Burr when “Hamilton” was off-Broadway before joining the Broadway production in August 2015.
Since the popularity of “Hamilton” exploded, Odom has released four solo albums along with a reissue of his first self-titled record. He also starred in Apple TV+’s animated musical comedy “Central Park” and played major roles in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “The Exorcist: Believer.”
