Why is Heartland leaving Netflix and when?

Netflix plans to remove all 16 seasons of Heartland, totaling 249 episodes, from its U.S. library on August 1, 2025. A notice on the show’s Netflix page lists July 31 as the “Last Day to Watch.” The platform has not announced any renewal of the licensing agreement.

Heartland has been a long-standing part of Netflix’s U.S. library since the early 2010s. However, the platform’s licensing rights are expiring. A Netflix support chat explained, Netflix stated, “Some titles may leave Netflix due to licensing agreements,” and explained that renewals depend on factors like “if the rights to the title are still available, how popular it is in a region, and how much it costs to license.”

The departure likely prevents Netflix U.S. from adding seasons 17 and 18 as originally expected. CBC recently renewed Heartland for a 19th season with 10 new episodes, which could further widen the content gap on Netflix U.S. if the licensing deal isn’t renewed.

Outside the U.S., Netflix still streams newer Heartland seasons, though it removed older seasons internationally in 2022. Domestically, the show will remain available across multiple platforms. Season 18, for example, premiered on UP Faith & Family. Other services where Heartland is available include Hallmark+, Peacock, Prime Video, The CW, and The Roku Channel.

Despite its impending removal, the show continues to perform strongly. According to Netflix Engagement Reports, Heartland accumulated over 500 million viewing hours globally between 2023 and 2024, equivalent to roughly 55 million views.
