Pixar has unveiled a release window for The Incredibles 3 during their presentation at Destination D23, a miniature version of the annual D23. Originally announced back at last year’s D23, the movie is currently slated to arrive at theatres in 2028 (via Collider).

The sequel was announced alongside Pixar’s other major releases for the upcoming years, which included Toy Story 5, two original releases, Hoppers and Gatto, and Coco 2.

With Disney also releasing Zotopia 2 later this year, it’s evident the media giant is aiming to double down on its most recognizable IPs. As for the next Incredibles movie, Brad Bird won’t be returning to the director’s chair.

Original The Incredibles Director Won’t Return to Helm the Threequel

Brad Bird, who was essential to Pixar’s dominance in the 2000s with Ratatouille and Incredibles, stories that resonated more with older viewers, has given the reins of the franchise to Elemental director Peter Sohn.

While the heavily anticipated sequel to The Incredibles 2 proved to be a disappointing follow-up to one of Pixar’s best to date, this was more of Disney’s fault than Bird’s, as its release date was moved up by one year.

However, Bird is still involved with the sequel, as in addition to producing, he’ll also pen the script, and as for Sohn, he has the backing of the Ratatouille filmmaker, who has been a mentor to the former since their early Pixar days.

He’s a multi-talent. That’s one of the reasons that I was always interested in whatever he was doing. He is kind of insatiable. He wants to know about every part of the process, and he wants to be able to understand every part of the process and even do every part of the process, because it allows him to understand the beast.

Although it’s exciting to have the best superhero family return on the big screen, considering original Pixar and Disney animated movies haven’t had the same impact post-COVID, the constant reliance on IPs is a bit concerning.

Why is Pixar Fast-Tracking The Incredibles 3?

In an ideal world, one might argue that a threequel could be a sign that they finally have a meaningful story to advance the franchise. While it’s certainly in the realm of possibilities, the threequel announcement seems like more of a reaction to the media giant’s recent underwhelming hits.

Compared to Inside Out 2, which was undoubtedly a great sequel that justified its existence, more original stories like Elio and Elemental didn’t dominate the theatres like pre-COVID Pixar movies often did (via Box Office Mojo).

Movies RT Score Box Office
Elio 83% $152.2M
Inside Out 2 91% $1.69B
Elemental 73% $496M

Although Pixar still has Hoppers and Gatto in the pipeline, if these two also fail to pull crowds like Elio, whose fault lies with Disney’s lack of marketing, sequels to established IPs might become their primary goal.

As for The Incredibles 3, hopefully Disney will allow the creators to create a story that would expand the superhero family in more meaningful ways than the sequel, which grossed $1.2B (via Box Office Mojo), thanks to brand recognition alone.
