Of the two games in Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake has the most added content and changes. Perhaps one of the most confusing changes is where to find the Magic Key. Early in the game, you’ll come across doors and chests that can only be opened with the Magic Key, but you won’t be able to open them for some time.
If you’re like me and remember the Magic Key (called the Silver Key back then) being found in the Lake Cave, then you might be confused when you realize there’s no key there this time around. In previous versions, getting the Silver Key was optional, though extremely helpful, but in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, you’ll need the Magic Key to advance through the story.

Unlocked Through The Main Story With The Mermaids
Getting to find the Magic Key in DQ 2 HD-2D Remake was one of the more confusing aspects of the game when I was playing it. This is partly because of just how many doors and chests you’ll stumble across BEFORE being able to actually get the key. While the Magic Key is necessary to advance through the main story, it’s also not missable, and you’ll acquire it naturally by playing through the game. You’ll just need a bit of patience.
To get the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, you’ll have to advance through the story until you meet the mermaids. You’ll be tasked with saving the mermaids’ homeland. After doing the whole underwater scenario, you’ll get the Magic Key as a reward for saving the mermaids. It’s as simple as that.

Doors & Chests That Open With The Magic Key
Once you have the Magic Key, you can go back and revisit the various places that have blue chests or doors. Some, like the ones in towns, are easy to find again. Others, like those in dungeons, will require you to backtrack a bit. The rewards vary from new equipment to Scrolls (and at least one chest I found was completely empty).
Even with all the changes in these games, the new location for the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake threw me for a loop, and I’m willing to bet other folks are confused as well. If you’re worried you missed it — don’t be. You just need to get through enough of the story to save the mermaids and earn the Magic Key as a reward.
