In Episode 11 of “Below Deck Down Under” season 3, Captain Jason Chambers fired deckhand Johnny Arvanitis for acting violently the night before.
After witnessing Arvanitis screaming and punching the walls, Chambers sent him to a hotel to cool off for the night.
The next day, he told the deckhand, “Look, you have worked so well, but punching walls and having that aggression, I can’t tolerate it. For the safety of the crew and us going forward, I have to let you go.”
Chambers then called in the bosun, Wihan Du Toit, after hearing from several crew members how difficult he was to work with.
“At the end of the day, I feel you’re not taking accountability for all the things that have been happening. And with everything else that’s going on, I’m going to make a change,” the captain told Du Toit.
He continued, “The only common denominator creating a divide in the team — it’s like an infection. And I need to cut the infection out. So I’m going to let you go.”
The double firing happened quickly, but Chambers was able to get two new crew members on board right away. Here are the new additions to “Below Deck Down Under” season 3.
Nate Salmon
Nate Salmon arrived just in time for the new charter as the bosun and told Chambers that he had just came back from a trip to the Himalayas after taking a break from work.
Salmon, who hails from Australia, told the cameras that he grew up with two sisters. “I’m so grateful because it taught me how to listen, how to be positive, fair, and easygoing.”
According to his Bravo bio, Salmon has seven years of experience in the yachting world and is very close to his mother.
His favorite traveling destination is Patagonia, and he shared, “I was born for the mountains.”
In January 18, he celebrated his sister Lauren’s marriage to Andrew Yeung, who works as a skipper. Salmon shared a carousel of Instagram pics of the special day, which included a ceremony and reception on a boat.
The replacement bosun is already getting love from his castmates on his April 14 Instagram post, on which he wrote, “Heard there was a superyacht in trouble, Bosun Nate is here to fix it! Catch the latest episode of Below Deck Down Under to see some new faces onboard Superyacht Katina!”
“And let the magic begin!!” deckhand Harry van Vliet replied. Stew Brianna Duffield wrote, “WELCOME BESTIE.”
Meanwhile, Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph exclaimed, “Yessssssssssss my man!!!!!!! He’s finally here!”
Nicolas Cattelan
Nicolas Cattelan was Arvanitis’ replacement who was pretty green with only six months of boating experience.
“I actually got into yachting pretty recently. Katina is by far the biggest boat I’ve ever worked on. Super complicated layout. Almost like the Starship Enterprise,” he said in a confessional.
Despite his good looks, Cattelan shared that he wasn’t popular growing up. “I was always a nerd about all sorts of things. Movies. Science. Being here makes me feel like I’m part of the Starship Enterprise crew. I feel like I’m discovering strange new worlds, and new cultures and planets and boldly going where no one has gone before,” he said in his first episode.
Unfortunately, his first day turned out rocky when he took a shot of liquor offered by a charter guest. After realizing his mistake, Cattelan said, “Captain Jason runs a dry boat. This could get me fired. That was so stupid.”
Fans will learn in episode 12 if Cattelan stays after he ends up confessing to Captain Jason, as shown in the mid-season trailer.
Still, he remains light-hearted about the misstep, and when van Vliet wrote on his Instagram post, “Let’s have a shot and celebrate!!!,” Cattelan had a hilarious response: “bullying will not be tolerated within the deck crew.”
As for Chambers, he replied, “too soon ouch.”
