Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 has just been released and has already managed to hook viewers to the storyline by introducing a new strange character, Mr. Whatsit. Accordingly, many are wondering who this character is and what his role in the overarching story will be. The final season of the sci-fi fantasy series begins with the protagonists handling the aftermath of the Season 4 finale.

Mr. Whatsit is none other than Stranger Things antagonist Henry Creel a.k.a. Vecna.
Viewers first learn of Mr. Whatsit through Holly Wheeler, Mike and Nancy’s younger sister. Holly seems to be the only one who can see him and has befriended him. She is shown greeting him from the inside of her house after seeing him outside while setting up breakfast for her family. A silhouette of Mr. Whatsit is also shown returning her greeting.
Holly believes Mr. Whatsit is real. She even tells Mike at one point that the latter has promised to protect her from Hawkins’ monsters. However, other people, including her mother, Karen Wheeler, believe he is simply an “imaginary friend.”
Holly and Mr. Whatsit’s disturbing connection eventually lands the former in trouble at school. This is after her teacher, who can’t see the latter, sees Holly standing at a fence talking to no one. Karen is subsequently called to the office to discuss Holly’s strange behavior.
After school, Holly is seen crying at home while her parents argue about her strange connection to Mr. Whatsit. Not long after, Holly is attacked by a Demogorgon and taken to the Upside Down, despite Karen and Ted Wheeler’s attempts to protect her.
Nancy and Eleven, who were late to save Holly, begin investigating Mr. Whatsit’s identity along with Mike and the others. Mike and Nancy later get their mother, injured by the Demogorgon while trying to protect Holly and Ted, to write down Mr. Whatsit’s real name, which Holly said was Henry.
The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, which comprise Volume 1, are currently streaming on Netflix. The next three episodes, making up Volume 2, will drop on Christmas, December 25, 2025, followed by the finale, which drops on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.
