Why The Summer I Turned Pretty Is Ending With Season 3

The third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is finally set to be released on Prime Video, and it will be the final entry in the series. Adapted from the best-selling books by Jenny Han, The Summer I Turned Pretty centers around Belly Conklin, and her annual summer adventures with her childhood friends, Jeremiah and Conrad, the latter of whom she has been in love with from a young age, in Cousins Beach, Massachusetts. During the summer before her 16th birthday, Belly experiences changes in her friendships and family that will impact her feelings forever.
The first two seasons proved to be a great success with both critics and viewers, and since The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 finale in 2023, readers have been eagerly anticipating the release of season 3. After The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 was delayed for two years, it was announced by Prime Video that the first episode was expected to be released on July 16, 2025. While there is much anticipation and excitement, Prime Video has also confirmed that the show will not continue after season 3.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Is Only Based On 3 Books
The Trilogy Was Released Between 2009 & 2011
The Summer I Turned Pretty is adapted from the novel trilogy of the same name, released between 2009 and 2011 by Jenny Han. The first season covers the events of the first book, where Belly experiences the trials and tribulations of first love and first heartbreak through her changing feelings towards brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah, and a new friend, Cam.
Season 2 is based on the second book in the series, It’s Not Summer Without You. The sequel depicts the conflicts of the Cousins Beach House and Belly struggling with her feelings for both Conrad and Jeremiah, as they cope with the impending death of their mother, Susannah.
Each season of The Summer I Turned Pretty covers one book of the trilogy, with season 3 covering the third and final entrant. Season 3 will be the final installment of the show and will cover the basis of the third installment of the trilogy, We’ll Always Have Summer. The third season will potentially see Belly set to begin the next chapter in her life as she finally decides how she feels about both Jeremiah and Conrad as she prepares to leave her summers at the beach house behind.
The release of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 means that the Prime Video series has concluded Belly’s coming-of-age story. Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, has stated that the third season is set to “finish the story” created by Han (via Entertainment Online). Considering that there are only three books in the original series, it is perfectly understandable why Prime Video has decided to conclude The Summer I Turned Pretty after season 3.
Why The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 4 Wouldn’t Be A Good Idea
A Fourth Season Would Be Deemed Unfaithful To The Original Story
After season 3, The Summer I Turned Pretty will have covered all the aspects of Jenny Han’s trilogy. A fourth season would mean having to establish a new plot beyond Han’s trilogy, which has the potential to drag out the story longer than necessary and severely hurt the themes of growing up, friendship, family, and romance that were explored throughout the entire The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy. Viewers could deem the fourth season unnecessary and unfaithful to the original plot, which wouldn’t be great.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Must Continue The Show’s Taylor Swift Trend For 1 Story To Work
The Summer I Turned Pretty must continue to feature Taylor Swift’s music in the show’s most romantic scenes in the upcoming third season.
The third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, also provides readers insight into what happened to Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah in an epilogue that jumps slightly ahead in time. Although The Summer I Turned Pretty series has made several notable changes, it remains largely faithful to Han’s trilogy.
The third book’s epilogue could possibly be depicted in season 3, if it follows the same pattern of faithfulness as the first two seasons. The inclusion of We’ll Always Have Summer’s episode would mean that all aspects of Belly’s coming-of-age story are addressed in the series, meaning a fourth season of The Summer I Turned Pretty isn’t needed or necessary.
