A Film Version Of Kaifi & I?

The  very remarkable  life of  actor  Shabana and and cinematographer Baba Azmi’s parents,  the illustrious  Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi is  already a huge successful play Kaifi & I where  Javed Akhtar and  Shabana Azmi play her parents.

We  now  hear there are  at least four  leading  producers in Bollywood desirous  of  making a film  version  of the  love story.

And Shabana Azmi may well agree to the  offer to film her parents’ life provided  they cast a fresh  younger  pair.

Says Shabana, “Javed and I have played the role on stage  over and over again  all over the world. We’ve taken the roles as far as we can. Now it’s time for  other actors  to  see what they can do with the  characters,”

Shabana lost her mother  the iconic Shaukat Kaifi  this week.

When I spoke to  her  on Sunday her hurt was  palpable  when she said, “Nothing and nobody can ever prepare for the loss of a parent but I am calm .My brother  Baba who never expresses emotion is very broken . I am grateful I got a chance to serve her and that I was with her when she breathed her last.”

A prayer meeting for the Shaukat Aapa, as she  was  universally known, will be held at  the Jalaram Hall in Vile Parle Mumbai on Tuesday  26th November from  5 pm to  6.30 pm.
