Is there a remake of the 1980 Kamal HaasanRati Agnihotri blockbuster Ek Duuje Ke Liye(EDKL) on the cards?According to sources Rati intends to produce the remake with her son and Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara Haasan.

Says Tanuj, “I think it’s a great idea with all the lineage and history  associated with the original. Let’s see if it happens.”

Kamal Haasan  refuses to comment on the feasibility and desirability of an EDKL remake. However he does reveal  that unknown to many a sequel to EDKL was made in Tamil. “It was called  Punnagai Mannan. It   was dubbed as Dance Master in Telugu. A few of the 80 million in the old  Andhra pradesh  demography know it as Dance Mast.It was supposed to be the sequel to Ek Duuje Ke Liye.  I was proud when on the silver jubilee function Mr. K Balachander publicly announced that the story idea was mine. It was, and he liked it but did not want to do a sequel”

However Kamal Haasan admits there are seeds of a sequel in the film. “ IF one watches Punnagai Mannan  carefully one can draw parallels to the EDKL characters. In my original  concept the film starts again with the climax scene from EDKL and we change the details of the suicide pact. It goes wrong. Vasu cannot keep his promise. He survives. and sees his love crash and die. He wakes up in the hospital accused of rape and murder and sentences quickly. The plot of Punnagai Mannan  is of a jailbird dancer coming out to face the world and finding another lonely sole contemplating suicide.Vasu discreetly dissuades her a couple of her attempts and then finally takes her as his student in his dance class .The dance school is owned by the Madhavi character  from EDKL, his teacher who taught him dance. And so it went.”
