Chamberlain is perhaps best known for starring in NBC’s medical drama “Dr. Kildare” that aired from 1961 to 1966. CNN says the actor’s portrayal of a dashing young physician on the show “cemented” Chamberlain’s heartthrob status in Hollywood.

In a 2014 New York Times interview, he said about his sexuality, “When you grow up in the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s, being gay, it not only ain’t easy, it’s just impossible. You cannot do it.” He added that he “assumed there was something terribly wrong with me. And even becoming famous and all that, it was still there.”
