The West Gate is one of the enduring mysteries of Blue Prince. Although you can see it from the moment you begin the game, it takes a while to figure out exactly how to unlock it. That’s the nature of just about everything in Blue Prince: almost every single room, puzzle, or item links back to something else in a totally different part of the mansion, and you’re never guaranteed to have all the pieces you need at once. Tantalizing mysteries like this one are why Blue Prince has captured so many players’ attention.
The West Gate is a bit of a unique puzzle, though, in that it’s not confined to a room you can draft. It’s one of very few locations on Mount Holly that’s always fixed in the same spot, no matter what. However, opening it requires you to visit multiple rooms in sequence, completing a number of different puzzles before you can unlock it. But you only have to open it once, and beyond the West Gate is a worthy reward: the ability to draft an Outer Room, which creates several new possibilities for each run.
Where To Find The West Gate Solution
West Gate Location
In order to find the West Gate, simply leave the mansion through its main entrance, turn right, and it’ll be directly in front of you. You can reach it the same way if you happen to unlock any alternate exits; just head back to the beginning and turn right facing away from the door. This shouldn’t cost you any steps.
What Rooms To Draft Before Opening The West Gate
You’ll need to draft two separate rooms in the same run before you can unlock the West Gate. First, draft the Garage, and then one of two rooms that can provide power: either a Utility Closet or a Boiler Room.

All Trophies & Achievements In Blue Prince
Blue Prince will come with plenty of achievements and trophies when it is released, but if you know what they are, you can focus on getting them all.
Now, Blue Prince is all about exploring for yourself, discovering new details, and taking careful notes. Although you may be anxious to move forward and get to the 46th room, the game is much better enjoyed when you take your time and unlock things at your own pace. I’d recommend trying to solve the West Gate puzzle on your own before you read any further. If you’ve drafted the Garage and power source, and still can’t figure it out, then read on for a more detailed guide to unlocking the West Gate.
How To Open The West Gate
Powering The Garage With The Boiler Room
In order to power the garage with a Boiler Room, the Garage will have to be adjacent to and accessible from the Boiler Room, or connected to the Boiler Room by a series of other rooms that all have ducts. If you can’t connect the Garage to the Boiler Room directly, you can connect the two with any of the following floor plans. I recommend seeing if you can draft the right rooms first before attempting to turn on the power; if it’s not in the cards for your current run, see the section below for an alternative way to power the garage.
- Archives
- Boiler Room
- Darkroom
- Laboratory
- Locker Room
- Passageway
- Pump Room
- Security Room
So, inside the Boiler Room, your first goal is to turn on all three of the green-painted tanks. Start with the one on the lower floor, directly next to the stairs; simply turn the valve to start it up. Then, turn the neighboring red pipes so that everything flows into the other tank in this lower area. Note that this causes a conveyor belt to start moving in front of the second tank; turn off the first valve when the valve is accessible, and turn it.
Now, pull the lever on the pipe next to the tank so that it’s pointing towards the right, and follow the pipes to the upper floor to the third green tank. Turn the valve and follow the pipes to the control panel in the center, altering any pipes’ or levers’ orientations so power is flowing to this central console. Interact with the console and turn the slider in the direction of the Garage or connecting room to activate the power.
How To Power The Garage With The Utility Closet
If you can’t use the Boiler Room, you can also power the Garage with a Utility Closet. Fortunately, you can build the Utility Closet anywhere in the mansion and still have it connect to the garage; all that matters is that you solve its puzzle correctly. The Utility Closet contains a fuse box, which you’ll have to tinker with to turn on the power, then redirect it to the garage.

Is Blue Prince Free For PlayStation Plus Subscribers?
Blue Prince looks to be one of the best games of 2025, but many PlayStation players will be wondering if the game will be available on PS Plus.
There’s a lot to be done here, including a puzzle that requires you to set the lights to certain colors. But for our purposes, just flip the switch next to Garage to “on.”
Drafting & Opening The Garage
Finally, you’ll need to draft the Garage, but the catch is that you can only draft it along the far western side of the mansion. That’s because it has an electric door that connects to the outside world, which is going to become key to opening up the West Gate in just a moment.
The Garage also contains several keys, so make sure to find them before moving on.
Enter the garage and press the button next to the metal door to open it. Head outside and follow the path, and you’ll shortly find yourself on the other side of the West Gate.
West Gate Rewards
Once you’ve unlocked it for the first time, the West Gate will always remain unlocked, even after daily resets. Having it open will allow you to build Outer Rooms, each of which creates a special effect for the day’s run.
Room |
Effect |
---|---|
Hovel |
Floorplans with Gem requirements can instead be drafted by spending steps. |
Root Cellar |
Dig Spots appear more often. |
Schoolhouse |
Eight Classrooms are added to the draft pool. |
Shelter |
Protects you from any negative effects in the first three Red Rooms you draft. |
Shrine |
You may sacrifice coins to receive a blessing that may last multiple days. |
Tomb |
Every dead end you draft spawns five coins in the Tomb. |
Tool Shed |
Contains two items. |
Trading Post |
You may trade certain items for others. |
With that, you should be all ready to unlock the West Gate and start building Outer Rooms – so long as the required floor plans appear while you’re drafting, of course. Like all mysteries in Blue Prince,
