Would Vidya Balan Make A Comeback With Tumhari Sulu?

After  a string  of non-starters  at the  boxoffice where she had the author-backed central role, including Ghanchakkar (2013), Shaadi Ke Side Effects(2014),Bobby Jasoos(2014), Hamari Adhuri Kahani(2015) , Te3n (2016) and Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh(2016)  and  Begum Jaan(2017) Vidya Balan is back playing the hero in  Tumhari Sulu.

But would the  film work at the boxoffice?

2017 has  not been particularly favourable for heroine-oriented  films like Hansal Mehta’s Kangana  Ranaut-helmed  Simran , Raveena Tandon’s  rape-and-revenge saga Maatr ,  the excellent Swara Bhaskara starrer Anaarkali Of Arrah, Tapsee Pannu’s Naam Shabana, Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor,  Madhur Bhandarkar’s Kirti Kulhari-starrer Indu Sarkar.

With all eyes set on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati  prospects  look bleak for Tumhari Sulu.

However trade pundit Komal Nahata is hopeful. He says, “Yes,Tumhari Sulu should definitely spell success for Vidya Balan because the first teaser that was out had had the audience thirsting for more. The film looks like a very nice slice-of-life film with a story that is not routine. It may start slow but there’s a feeling that the word of mouth for the film will be so strong that collections will soon pick up.”

Adds trade analyst Atul Mohan, “I hope it works. After series of experimental films  Vidya Balan can hope for success with this mainstream  film. The advantage in Tumhari Sulu can be that Vidya is playing herself as a housewife which goes with her present status in life , and not mainstream heroine. The plot premise of a middleclass family story looks identifiable. As we have been saying always its the content which will do the talking in the long run.”
